This story celebrates through words and the art of Benny Andrews, the being of Josephine Carroll Smith. She was the daughter of parents who had been enslaved and had little to give their only daughter beyond a strong belief in herself. Mrs. Smith became one of the top educators in Washington, D. C., but her greatest legacy is the personal encouragement and support she gave to help others follow their dreams.
